You may have had the opportunity to meet this year's Canada Summer Job hires, while others may not have had the chance. We’d like to offer everyone a glimpse into who they are, what they've been working on during their eight weeks with us, and what they’ll be taking away from their time here. Below, in their own words, they share their experiences.
Erin Becker – Volunteer Services Assistant
Hello everyone, I’m Erin, a Canada Summer Jobs student, and I’ve been working in the volunteer services department with Renee! This has consisted of calling volunteers (and leaving a LOT of voicemails :P). Through these phone calls, I get to interact with people from all over our wonderful volunteer network. Whether its thanking someone for their thousands of hours banked, or encouraging someone to sign up for their first shift, I make sure the volunteers feel appreciated, and welcome to reach out to us at any time. I confirm and update volunteer information including their contact info and general interests. I also reach out to re-engage or archive old volunteers, and tidy profiles on BetterImpact. I’m not always on the phone though! Come find me any time you need something moved around the office, need to know where the closest pizza place is to a certain ReStore, or need some old files sorted!
I have learned so much about Habitat since starting! I feel so privileged to see behind the scenes of this amazing operation. What stands out to me the most is the tremendous impact volunteers have on keeping our organization up and running (I may be a bit biased coming from volunteer services). I am absolutely in awe of the hourly value of volunteer service. Another thing I learned about volunteering is how many amazing teams we have, including those in the ReStore, salvage and special events teams that all play a part in making our Counties a better place to live. Before I started here, I thought volunteering only included building houses! I have since grown to know so much more about an organization I was already passionate about, and I want to thank every member of our Habitat team here for making my Canada Summer Jobs experience so fulfilling!
Megan Demars - Fundraising Assistant
Since beginning my summer position with Habitat for Humanity Heartland Ontario, I have gained a deeper understanding of the organization and its impact on our community. Previously, I had a few misconceptions about how Habitat for Humanity worked. However, I have learned that Habitat provides families who might otherwise find home ownership out of reach with affordable mortgages and homes, enabling them to build equity and secure a safe, decent place to call home. I have witnessed firsthand how Habitat builds these homes, diverts waste from landfills through the ReStore, and offers affordable home goods to members of my own community.
As a fundraising assistant, although new to the field, I've gained valuable experience in creating and organizing impactful community events. I've learned how to tailor these events to engage specific audiences effectively, using them not only to raise funds but also to enhance awareness and recruit volunteers. This summer, I had the opportunity to attend a golf tournament benefiting local Habitat affiliates. I was able to speak with attendees who were unfamiliar with Habitat or unclear about its model, as well as those who had helped build homes with Habitat. It was a great feeling to help spread awareness about Habitat's mission and to hear personal stories from community members about the positive impact Habitat's projects have had on their lives, their families, and the broader community.
I am proud to contribute to Habitat’s mission, knowing that the funds we raise support the construction of affordable homes and essential repairs that ensure safe living conditions. What I find most rewarding about my role is the opportunity to make a tangible difference in my own community.
Vanessa McLeod - Marketing Assistant
Hi, I’m Vanessa, and I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for the wonderful opportunity I’ve had to work with Habitat Heartland this summer. As the Summer Marketing Assistant, I’ve had the chance to contribute to in-store updates and signage at our Wonderland Road location as well as designing content for social media.
Working with Habitat for Humanity has been deeply fulfilling. I’ve gained a richer understanding of their mission to provide affordable and safe housing. Having previously worked at a Heartland ReStore, I’ve experienced both the behind-the-scenes operations and customer service aspects and this summer, I’ve been able to combine my passion for community work with my background in media and marketing in this position.
I’ve learned a great deal about the importance of advocating for affordable housing and the significant impact of Habitat’s mission. It’s been insightful to see how social media and marketing play a crucial role in non-profit work—whether it’s encouraging community involvement, seeking donations, or inviting customers to shop at the ReStore for great deals. Additionally, I’ve gained valuable experience in graphic design and enhancing user experience through my assistance and contributions to our new website.
It’s been a fantastic experience working with such a dedicated team.
Jacob Kubu - Receiving Clerk
My name is Jacob Kubu and this summer I was given the opportunity to work for Habitat for Humanity Heartland Ontario for the summer job placement Program. My position was receiving room clerk.
I began working at the Adelaide Restore for a few weeks and finished off the program working at the Wonderland ReStore. I have gained so many experiences within this position from working with customers to processing product, loading and unloading trucks. I was also able to help out on the truck for a day. Working with so many wonderful colleagues and volunteers, I am so grateful that I was apart of this great organization. I learned so much about what Habitat for Humanity offers and provides for our community.
Thank you for the knowledge and wonderful experience that will help me along my journey in the workforce.
