Onondaga: A Collaborative Build with Six Nations of the Grand River

The Onondaga 1 development at Six Nations of the Grand River reserve

Together, we can make a difference. The collaborative build between Habitat for Humanity Hamilton and Habitat for Humanity Heartland with Six Nations of the Grand River is a testament to this belief.

The Onondaga 1 and 2 projects are dynamic initiatives aimed at creating safe and affordable housing for Six Nations families. In 2021, Habitat Heartland was invited to support the Onondaga project with resources and labor. Habitat for Humanity Hamilton and Heartland began collaborating, and the project gained momentum with the approval of Onondaga 1. Since then, the collaboration has expanded significantly.

The Onondaga builds are in various stages of completion. Onondaga 1, the first housing project, is now completed, and Onondaga 2 is expected to be finished by early fall of this year. As of July 2024, a third phase of this partnership project is a clear possibility.

Each phase consists of five conjoined units, forming what we here at Habitat refer to as a 'fiveplex.' These units include two one-bedroom units, two two-bedroom units, and one three-bedroom unit. The one-bedroom units, designed in a bungalow style, can also be adapted into accessible housing.
