Helping those in need
The mission of the ReStore program is to generate funds for the Habitat for Humanity program in Canada. Last year, as a result of ReStore’s metal recycling and electronic waste recycling initiatives, it’s estimated that an additional $750,000 in recycling revenue was generated.  The organization estimates that in 2012 it was able to divert approximately 25,000 tons of waste from landfills across Canada.

Multiple benefits
Today there are 80 ReStores in Canada and over 750 in the U.S. where people can donate small items and receive a tax receipt for the value of the goods. The goods are then sold in the store and put toward Habitat for Humanity Canada’s homebuilding programs.

In addition to the partnerships ReStore enjoys with members of the communities that they serve, it has also cultivated meaningful local and national partnerships with some of Canada’s largest manufacturers, distributors and retailers, including The Home Depot Canada, All Weather Windows, American Standard, The Brick, Sears Canada, HBC, CIL Paints, 3M Canada, Blinds to GO, Lowes, Rona, Home Hardware and others.

“The ReStore program provides not only a way for businesses to give back to the community but we offer them a bottom line solution as well,” Voisin explains. “Our stores offer businesses the opportunity to dispose of dead stock, end of line product, excess inventory, cancelled jobs or discontinued products. A partnership with ReStores allows organizations to save money on transportation because we will pick it up, and they avoid costly landfill expenses. It also allows them to help the environment by repurposing the products.”
