Nothing beats hearing your favourite Christmas song on the radio. That’s when you crank up the tunes and sing at the top of your lungs (or at least lip sync).

You can’t help but feel nostalgic as you listen, hum and sing to your favourite Christmas songs. But have you ever wondered what the background or origin was of your favourite Christmas song or carol? Here’s some trivia facts about Jeans ‘n Classics’ (and maybe your) favourite Christmas songs.

Did you know . . .

  • O Christmas Tree” was called “O Faithful Pine,” “Oh Tree of Fir” and of course “Ach Tannenbaum,” which was the original song name when it was composed in the 16th
  • “I’ll be home for Christmas” was written to tell the tale of soldiers overseas at the holidays.
  • “All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth” was written by an elementary school teacher who had an entire grade-two class of toothless pupils, who inspired the Christmas hit.
  • Deck the Halls” originally called “Deck the Hall”, was written to accompany a pagan dance.
  • James Pierpont who penned, “Jingle Bells” and originally called the song “One Horse Open Sleigh,” originally wrote the song to celebrate Thanksgiving.
  • The lively and happy lyrics for “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” was written by a grief stricken James Gillespie, just after his brother had died. He based it on memories of his childhood at Christmas.
