Supporting the Dream of Homeownership

“In the dream of my grandmother’s tree
Little chasms of wind caught my glance
Runnelling small eye-roads of leaves
High up there leading into the transparent
Heart of things, and I remembered how
Strange I used to feel looking up
Knowing I would be old sometime and have
No special plans. But then in the dream
A smell of lilac descended…”

These are the words of Don Coles, a poet from Woodstock, Ontario from his poem, “In the Dream of My Grandmother’s Tree”

Woodstock is home to three Habitat for Humanity families who had dreams of their own – a home, yard and family memories to create. When asked what would be the best thing about owning a home, one Habitat Woodstock mother replied, “planting a vegetable patch and painting the children’s rooms in their favourite colours”, and another said she wanted to grow perennials and vegetables in her yard, and to use the garden to teach her son about responsibility, commitment and achieving goals.

It seems that growing a family and growing a garden go hand in hand and the simplicity of trees, flowers and vegetables means a great deal to the development of dreams. We are proud of our work in Woodstock, and of our social enterprise the ReStore. Located at 1058 Parkinson Road, the Woodstock ReStore sells quality new and gently used furniture and building materials. The ReStore revenues cover 100% of the administrative costs of Habitat for Humanity Heartland Ontario.  To donate materials to the Woodstock ReStore please call 519 421 0003 or email ReStore.Woodstock@habitat4home.ca.
