Becoming a Volunteer

volunteer-buttonWe Have A Plan – Find Out Where You Fit In!

Habitat for Humanity is a people-to-people partnership drawing families and communities in need together with volunteers and resources to build decent affordable housing. Habitat is committed to the development and uplifting of families and communities, not only to the construction of homes.

This is one of the foundational principles of Habitat for Humanity and is enshrined in the Affiliate Covenant between Habitat for Humanity Canada and Habitat for Humanity Heartland Ontario. Being a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity Heartland Ontario means you are an integral part of what we do and how we do it.

When you break it down Habitat Heartland Ontario has three basic components – we are part of a continuum of organizations seeking to meet the need for decent affordable housing; we are a construction company seeking to build qualify affordable homes in the safest, greenest, most affordable way possible; and we are mortgage holders. Volunteering on our construction sites is most highly visible, but it represents only one of the many unique opportunities we offer. There is plenty of work to be done before and after the hammer swings!

If you are considering volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, or have already decided to want to give it a try I recommend the following steps

  1. Take a look around our website. Take a look at what we do our housing program from how we select and support families, finding land and planning our builds, our construction projects, administration and governance.
  2. Decide where you would like to start. Fulfilling volunteer experiences begin with a good match of your skills and passions, with our roles and responsibilities. Saying you will help wherever needed is not very helpful. You can always try something else if we don’t get it right the first time! Check here for information about our Volunteer Opportunities.
    1. Those interested in volunteering at our ReStore – download and fill out the Volunteer Application Form & Release Waiver and Indemnity Form and send it in to our Volunteer Coordinator.  Watch our Safety Video online before you’re first scheduled shift.

    2. Those interested in volunteering on a Buildsite – Download a Release Waiver and Indemnity Form and send it in to our Volunteer Coordinator.  Watch our Safety Video online before you’re scheduled to come to the build site.
  3. Follow up with a phone call if you don’t hear back right away. There may be a delay in responding at the height of build season but your interest is important so a prompt from you is often helpful to keep things on track.
